Basically, there are two types of smile, and
within each there are variations. Typically,
the upper six front permanent teeth appear
with the two central incisors tend to be
longer than the two adjacent teeth or
lateral incisors.

The cuspids support the corners of the mouth
and should be approximately the same length
as the central incisors. This type of smile
conveys youth, boldness and warmth, so
called "youthful smileline".
In the more youthful smileline, the front
teeth are longer and help create a line that
comes slightly downward in the middle and up
at the corners.Teeth in the older smileline
make a straight horizontal line.

An older-appearing smileline is one in which
the front teeth have been so worn that the
teeth appear straight across.
