A sealant is a thin, resin coating applied
to the chewing surface of posterior teeth.
This is used
to fill in narrow grooves and fissures in a
tooth that can not be adequately cleaned by
brushing.
In most cases, the tooth structure has fine
grooves or pits which accumulate plaque, not
because the person doesn't brush, but
because they're too narrow to allow even one
bristle into them. These develop cavities
over time, and you don't want that. More
than 75% of dental decay begins in these
deep grooves. Through sealant therapy we put
on a coating that seals the grooves and
pits, making it possible to brush off all
the plaque and keep your teeth healthy.
A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep
grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean
surface. Sealants can protect teeth from
decay for many years, but need to be checked
for wear and chipping and regular visits.
Reasons for sealant therapy:
-
Children and teenagers: As soon
as the six year, at the age of the first
permanent back teeth appear or any time
throughout the cavity prone years of 6
to 18.
-
Adults: tooth surfaces without
decay that have grooves or depressions.
-
Baby teeth: occasionally done if
teeth have grooves or depressions and
child is cavity prone.
Sealants are easily applied dentist or
dental hygienist and the process takes only
a couple of minutes per tooth. Proper home
care, a balanced diet, and regular dental
visits will aid in the life of your new
sealants.
